Happy All Saints’ Day! You can be sure I’ll be praying for the souls of my brother Mark, my godfather Milt, my grandparents, and my good friends Goodboy “Doc” Frechette and Shirley Andrusaitis, amongst others. May they all find eternal rest and peace in God’s eternal care.
I know what you’re thinking: what does a cow have to do with All Saints’ Day? Well, one of my favorite Pink Floyd tracks is a quirky little cut from their 1970 Atom Heart Mother album (see cover above) called “Alan’s Psychedelic Breakfast”. It’s a three-part suite conceived to be a sort of “day in the life” of your usual working-man stiff: waking up, breakfast being made, bills being paid, etc. The final section is called “Morning Glory”, and it’s a lovely kind of gentle, pastoral tune that no one in their wildest imaginations would never associate with the Floyd, but it shows just how imaginative they could be. The link is from a cover band, but it’s played so perfectly that I just had to link to it. My brother Mark used this particular tune to hone his drum-playing skills; he’d just put the album on at a high volume down in our cellar where our band would rehearse and just play along with Floyd drummer Nick Mason. Whenever I hear this tune I can still see him doing it to this day.
On this All Saints Day, say a prayer for all those you have loved and cherished. May they all be fully immersed in the eternal light and presence of God’s love and mercy.
