Ready for planting, Sunday afternoon:

There was lots to do late Sunday afternoon (besides taking pictures) in anticipation of the tree nursery guys coming Monday to plant the new queen palms and some ornamental grass that would bring a sense of symmetry to the back of the swimming pool area. The walkway around the pool, already a narrow approach as it was, needed to be trimmed back, and the pool needed to be skimmed and the sides scrubbed so everything looked spiffy to our invited guests. I was anxious about the whole proceedings and had trouble sleeping Sunday night. Would the palms fit? Would they have enough room to get the palms in there? Would they complain – and want to charge more – for having to do a lot more digging and root removal than anticipated?

I needn’t have worried, for the answers to the questions were yes, yes, and no.

It was 8:30 on the dot when I heard the sound of a truck coming down our street and jumped out of my office chair to meet it at the driveway. Seeing the truck loaded down with all kinds of trees and bushes, it was readily apparent that we were just the first stop on what was going to be for them a very busy planting day:

My mind was immediately put at ease when the guy supervising the job – tall, thin, wearing a big white cowboy hat – took one look at our backyard and said, Bueno, esta muy bueno. I showed him the lay of the land where the irrigation lines and landscaping light wiring were and where the two queens and the ornamental grass plant were going to go, and in just a minute’s time two other guys appeared armed with shovels and pick-axes and the three began widening the holes already there:

Thirty minutes of hard work later, the trees and bush were in place, sitting in big bowls created to hold the water that would be needed to get them started properly:

Fifteen minutes after that, I had instructions for the watering schedule for the next two weeks, and the truck was revving up to take them to their next destination. You saw the before pictures above, here is what the area looked like after:

There’s still quite a bit of work to be done to restore the area to what it will permanently look like, with lots of rock and dirt to move after one final palm tree (a lone pygmy date) gets planted to the right of the ornamental grass. But already the area looks more attractive than it did, and it will be great to see the area in all its tropical splendor once everything is back in place.

  1. Ok…I am worried that you may have gotten buried in one of the palm tree holes as there has not been one rant about the government shut down or…………….you have had a coronary and are unable to type.
Please let us know you are ok otherwise I will have to send a bunch of Democrats to rescue you.
