When someone says “all girl rock band” one might immediately recall The Bangles, The Runaways, or the Go Gos. But long before them there was Fanny, trailblazing a road that made all of their successors climb a little easier. Not sure how I might have come across them back in 1972 – it might have been on the strength of their fairly popular remake of Marvin Gaye’s hit “Ain’t That Peculiar” – but I know my brother Mark and I really liked their sound and started collecting their LPs. And it was at the old legenday Paul’s Mall in Boston that we were able to see them in concert – it was the first rock concert we both saw.

Fanny in their original lineup was led by two Filipino sisters, June and Jean Millington on lead and bass, respectively, Nicky Barclay on keyboards, and drummer Alice DeBuhr. They played what I would consider pretty standard garage rock, but they carved out for themselves a pretty unique sound for their time, and they weren’t afraid to dabble in other forms of rock, from Top 40 pop to folk and country. This lineup lasted for just a few years (1970-73) until after their Mother’s Pride album, upon which they went off the rails after June Millington and DeBuhr left the group. Still seeing them and hearing some of their songs on YouTube brings back a flood of great memories.

Here are a bunch of songs I consider among their best:

7. Charity Ball, from Charity Ball. The video comes from a Sonny & Cher TV show where they lip-synched to their record.

6. Summer Song, from Mother’s Pride. Very ’70s sounding!

5. Borrowed Time, from Fanny Hill. A Nicky Barclay composition with some great June Millington slide guitar. This song just drips with producer Richard Perry’s influence – you hear the same kind of horn arrangements on the albums he produced for Ringo Starr in 1973 (Ringo) and 1975 (Goodnight Vienna).

4. I Need You Need Me, from Mother’s Pride. This song features keyboardist Nicky Barclay on vocals. I dunno, I just like this song – it’s just so odd. As a sucker for tags, what really makes it for me is the “where are you?” tag that takes this song to fade-out in a round that combines the verse and chorus in an awkward juxtaposition. Not sure it works, but that’s one of the reasons why I like it.

3. Ain’t That Peculiar, from Fanny Hill. June Millington’s slide guitar grabbed me like a big rat the very first time I heard it and I was hooked. If you listen closely enough you’ll hear sister Jean’s bass with a real fuzz tone on it – they just don’t make like music like this anymore.

2. The Sound And The Fury, from Fanny Hill. A bit of soft rock with a C & W influence sung by June Millington.

1. All Mine, from Mother’s Pride. A sweet confection, perfect for Top 40 radio. Not sure why this wasn’t released as a single because it has hit written all over it.

Fortunately, all of their original recordings can be found in a new anthology called Fanny: First Time In A Long Time (the name of one of my favorite tunes of theirs, but I couldn’t find it anywhere to add to the above). It’s great to see this group finally get the recognition they have long deserved. They’re definitely worth checking out.
