…a couple of other highlights for 2013 I forgot to mention in yesterday’s post:
The Houston Astros will now be playing in the American League West. Considering they had a gawdawful team last year in the pitching-friendly National League, one can only guess how rough their pitchers will have it in a league featuring the DH.
The PGA Tour has released its 2013 schedule, and it’s going be a shorter one than what people are used to:
The 2013 season begins with the Hyundai Tournament of Champions at Kapalua on Jan. 4-7, which again features a Monday finish. The FedExCup concludes with the Tour Championship on Sept. 19-22, and then the 2013-14 season will start a few weeks later in October.
For the last six years, at least four tournaments — part of the Fall Series — were held after the FedExCup ended. That gave players a chance to earn enough money to keep their cards by finishing in the top 125 on the PGA Tour money list. Next year, most of those Fall Series event will be considered the start of a new season.
That 2014 season schedule starting in the fall is something I’m going to have to get used to. One change I’m glad to see is that the weekend after the Masters will once again have the players going up to Hilton Head to play in the RBC Heritage. After they moved it a couple of years ago it just didn’t seem the same. Now the event is back on the schedule where it belongs.
If this is true, I love it. What a great name for a basketball team! Can’t wait to see their logo. Too bad they can’t go back to using the old Jazz name, though – I liked that.
For years, the Astros played small ball in the Astrodome. They were fun. First to third, run, run, run. A quintessential National League team. Now, they’re going to have to alter their philosophy dramatically and bring in some sluggers to compete in the American League. Gonna take time. It’s a good move for baseball. The Astros and their garish uniforms belong in the American League. 🙂

Changing the Hornets name should have been a priority when they left Charlotte. There are mixed feelings here about changing it to Pelicans, though. The New Orleans Pelicans AAA baseball team has a rich history and a lot of people, myself included, don’t want to always have to distinguish the two.
