We’ve officially begun the process of trying to bond two single rabbits together once again. Butterscotch has been lonely since losing her buddy Geronimo last month, and new arrival Marlie has been without her mate for about six months or so. Marlie is a pretty chocoloate-brown Rex with very thick and silky fur that would look perfect as a hat worn by someone in Siberia, loves people, eats voraciously, and is a bit excitable.
We knew going in that bonding females is a bit tougher than bonding, say, a male and female, but knowing that Marlie’s previous mate was a female previously and that Butterscotch had shared her initial space at the Bunny Basics with a couple of females, we felt it was worth the try. We put them in adjacent, neutral cage areas in the guest bedroom for several days before introducing them to one another in yet another neutral place – my bathroom. The first outing did not go well (the fur was really flying!) but the second and third times out have shown slow progress. They really don’t appear to like each other right now, but we’re hoping that with enough time and patience they’ll gradually change their attitudes. The jury’s still out, we’ll see. Here’s a picture of the two of them avoiding each other:
It won’t be as quick or as easy as it was with Butterscotch and Geronimo, I’ll tell you that!
