Ed. note: Golf Channel is all over this year’s Goodboys Invitational golf tournament like white on rice. This past weekend, GC’s Kelly Tilghman and Sir Nick Faldo tracked down Goodboy Ron “Cubby” Myerow for a brief chat to discuss his plans and preparations for this year’s event:
We’re here with 2003 Goodboys Invitational champion Ron “Cubby” Myerow to talk 2012 Goodboys Invitational. Lots of chatter out there, Cubby, now that the 2012 teams have been chosen. This year, you’ll be paired with Scott “Gilligan” Tripp. I’m sure he’s – as well as all Goodboys fanatics out there – wondering about the state of your game as the 2012 golf year unfolds. What can you tell us about the state of your game and your preparations for July at Goodboys?
I’m thinking of a new approach to my game this year, Kelly. While I’m awaiting the reply of another Goodboys response to a recent email I sent on whether or not someone will share a room with me at the Portsmouth Sheraton, I’m thinking of calling in Michelle Wie as a roommate? I could use the advice of the former LPGA champion.
Michelle Wie would be an, uh, interesting choice, for not just a roomate but a partner as well. But, last I checked, the fact she’s not a Goodboy would seem to preclude her being eligible as both a partner and a roomate, correct? I know that for a fact, as I got turned down last year after “Goose” Dwyer tried to recruit me as his roommate.
She’s the youngest player to qualify for a LPGA tournament! I don’t consider her a role model for myself, but I respect her game (or did respect her game). Ya, I read her book “The Making of a Champion” and enjoyed it very much. I would very much like to spend the weekend with her and think I could get some great golf advice about my game (maybe more). Bottom line, Kelly, I look forward to this tournament every year and think it’s about time to score low.
The thing I think Goodboys aficianados out there want to know is what are your plans for improving your game if Michelle Wie isn’t your partner? I mean, there’s a huge difference between her and your partner-to-be (although not so much on the links, given his to drive a golf ball). What are you going to do to prepare both mentally and physically for the grind of a Goodboys weekend? After all, it’s been eight years since you were last part of a champion team and I know you must be itching to get back in that winner’s circle again.
What I’m trying to do more of this year, Nick, is focus on my finishing position. Everyone knows your weight will be on the front position if you happen to finish well and in a proper position, but I’m also working on improving my balance maintenance during the whole process of the swing. I’ve found that most of the breakdown in my swing occurs when the left side collapses in towards the golf ball and far away from my intended target – and I’m not talking Michelle Wie here! I know this is caused by my taking the club back too flat at the initial stages of the backswing, which, in turn, leads to the pulling of the body very early and affects the flat swing I’m attempting. I’ve noticed other Goodboys make the mistake of starting the swing by turning their bodies especially to the lower parts without realizing the significance of staying more quiet on the early stages of the swing. I’ve tried to tell them (and Mike “Vegas” Clark, you know who I’m talking about!) that this lack of flexibility and over-swinging can also cause serious breakdowns that can effect other parts of their games, but hey, that’s not my problem. I’ve found it is helpful to measure the amount of the bend in my left leg to see how much it moves away from the required starting position, and I’m also working on having the right attitude towards the game by putting in mind that I really have to work really hard in preparation for Goodboys weekend. To that end, I’m really trying to focus on chicks less and utilize more of the little free time I have to practice and look for new tips and ideas that will help perfect my game. Which is where Michelle would come in.
That’s fantastic stuff, Cubby – you sound like you’re really serious about making a statement at this year’s Goodboys Invitational.
You know, Nick, this game is all about tradition, honor, and integrity, and I’m just trying to do the best I can to represent myself with dignity and a sense of appreciation at what being a Goodboy is all about. Eh, you wouldn’t have Michelle’s phone number handy, would you?
Here at Golf Channel we don’t know if Michelle knows Cubby, anything about him, his game, or whether or not he even exists, for that matter. What we do know that Ron “Cubby” Myerow is gearing up for another great weekend with the Goodboys in Portsmouth N.H., and you’ll be able to check out all the action this coming July 20-22 – not just here at Golf Channel, but on NBC Sports as well. Thank you, Cubby, for your time.
TGWS is not only my personal “Goodboys” mentor. I now make him my publicist.
Thanks, for the press Shank.
