Another Sunday, another fantastic finish on the PGA Tour. Seems like every week there’s a blistering fight to finish – last week it was Rory McIlroy at the Honda Classic, this week it was Justin Rose holding off a charging Bubba Watson to win the Cadillac World Golf Championship. Last week on 18 it was Tiger’s amazing approach shot to cap off a wonderful 62, this week it was Bubba hitting a beautiful approach out of the rough to put himself in position to force a playoff with Rose. Alas, it was not to be, as Bubba’s birdie putt just missed, but it was great viewing nonetheless.
What made the final round so interesting to watch was seeing Watson spray the ball all over the place on the front nine to fritter away the 3-shot lead he held at the start of play, only to right the ship and put himself in position for an unlikely comeback win. It was also interesting to watch Keegan Bradley absolutely implode just after he took the lead away from Watson early on: it just goes to show that not even the pros are immune to bad stuff happening out there when the pressure is on. Just ask Sergio Garcia about that!
Of course, the story of the day had to be Tiger Woods withdrawing after 11 holes due to some kind of leg injury, the extent of which still remains unknown. Seeing the MetLife blimp follow Tiger’s every move from the moment he left the course to driving away recalled O.J. Simpson and that white Bronco from years back. I mentioned last week that I wasn’t ready to call Tiger “back” until he put together four solid rounds of golf; one can only wonder, given the fact that the injury involves his troublesome left leg and (possibly) the same Achilles tendon that contributed to him missing four months of play last year, just how durable Woods can expect to be for the rest of his career.
