Today I turn 55 years old. Yikes.
I guess you can say the only good thing about turning 55 is that it automatically qualifies me for early-bird senior specials at local restaurants, air travel (I think) and God knows what else.
I look back on all this time and think how I’ve wasted an awful lot of those years just stumbling through trying to figure out who I am, what I am, and what I’m supposed to be doing with this life, and to what end? Methinks the writer of Ecclesiastes was right when he wrote:
“Vanity of vanities,†says the Preacher,
“Vanity of vanities! All is vanity.â€What advantage does man have in all his work
Which he does under the sun?A generation goes and a generation comes,
But the earth remains forever.Also, the sun rises and the sun sets;
And hastening to its place it rises there again.Blowing toward the south,
Then turning toward the north,
The wind continues swirling along;
And on its circular courses the wind returns.All the rivers flow into the sea,
Yet the sea is not full.
To the place where the rivers flow,
There they flow again.All things are wearisome;
Man is not able to tell it.
The eye is not satisfied with seeing,
Nor is the ear filled with hearing.That which has been is that which will be,
And that which has been done is that which will be done.
So there is nothing new under the sun.
— Ecclesiastes 1:2-9
Maybe you shouldn’t occupy yourself too much with these kinds of big questions and just live your life as it comes to you, maybe you’re not meant to learn that kind of thing until you turn, oh, I don’t know – 60? Or even later. Or maybe you never do.
I don’t know what else to say, so I’ll leave y’all with this classic cut from The Eagles, it’s a good one.

Happy Birthday…you are still a youngster as I will be 63 in March…even though you have more grey hair, more wrinkles, more things to grouse about. However, when it comes to friends I could not ask for more. Love and blessings on this your natal day. Jana

speaking of the Eagles…they are playing here this Sat at the brand new UL arena downtown. It’s a beauty and a wonderful addition to the downtown area. Would have gone to see them but the tickets are outrageous and I did see them when they first started touring..still one of my all time favs…Take It To The Limit is one of my “funeral” songs..I have a song list for the end of my life celebration.

Thanks Rob!
And thanks Jana, let’s hope we don’t have to roll out that funeral song list any time soon. Knowing you as I do, I have a few ideas of my own. 🙂
