Oh, I’m sure there will be days we still get in the ’90s – perhaps even a 100 or two, although it isn’t likely – but summer finally came to end out here in the Valley of the Sun. Today started out hot and muggy, but then, as predicted, the thunderstorms came through and knocked the temps down and blew out the humidity. It’s about time! A few more weeks of “half summer” and we’ll be able o settle into glorious Arizona winter.
You know when you know summer’s over here? It’s not the daytime temps, because the sun is still hot and we’ll get temps in the 80s and 90s for a couple more weeks, it’s the nighttime lows that tell you pool season is about done. Look at the predicted lows for the next several days. You get 2-3 days in a row where you drop down into the ’50s, and that pool water will be singing “sayonara, sailor”.
It’s been such a long hot summer, yet for some reason I just never got into the pool scene this year like I’ve done in years past. Guess there was just too much going on at work and in and around the house. Next spring the pool will get drained and we’ll start it back up all over again. But it’s still fun tracking the daily temps; once I get tired of it I’ll need to find some other tag to amuse me when writing these posts. My friend Tom says I should create a daily “warmth differential” – the difference between President Obama’s approval numbers and the water temperature. Sounds like a hoot, but no thanks… too much work.

Pool temp: 80 degrees
Here in The Bluegrass it is definitely Fall…however, with the 6 week drought leaves will fall dead instead of going into glorious colors. I have the backbreaking chore of digging up banana trees to prepare to store for the winter and bring in plants as nighttime temps are hovering in the low 40’s with risk of frost.
I ponder what sweater or light jacket to wear…would rather wear cargo shorts, tee shirts and be barefooted.
