A new week begins, guaranteed to be less interesting than the one just past, for sure. But, as they say, life goes on…
I don’t think anyone could have anticipated Tiger Woods having the kind of weekend he did. I mean, sure, his personal life is a wreckage, and sure, he hasn’t played alot, and sure, he’s dealing with a lot of distractions, but what happened to that swing and that oh-so-pure putting stroke? I mean, he’s just moving the ball around out there like a Goodboy would…
I am so over the Red Sox this year. They’re playing crappy, disinterested baseball and giving the opposition extra outs every single game. Yet somehow, manager Terry Francona obviously thinks this is OK – after all, I’ve yet to hear a discouraging word from him about the defensive play of his team all year. It’s really embarrassing, to the point where I’m not even watching them anymore. It’s time for new blood – not to mention new personnel – on the Red Sox bench. Prediction: they’ll finish 16 games out of first and 12 out of the wild card slot. I fully anticipate blood-letting on the streets in Boston come October.
I have no sympathy for those liberals concerned about Michelle Obama and forty of her closest friends galavanting around the Spanish countryside with the economy in the state it’s in. You folks wanted hope and change? Well, you you got it.
When I lived in New England I used to dread the long-term predictions for the coming winter, because that meant I’d be going back to school soon and winter wasn’t that far away. But here in the Valley of the Sun, who cares? We still have two months more of 100+ degree temps, then the Almighty will flick the off switch, then you enter why people live here in Arizona in the first place. Happens every year like clockwork.
My absentee ballot for the upcoming Republican primary arrived while I was in India. Lots of statewide races and ballot questions I don’t care about. I’m only voting in two races – Governor Jan Brewer for the Republican nomination for Governor, and John McCain for Senate. Yeah, I know he’s a RINO (i.e., Republican in name only) but J.D Hayworth has run a crappy campaign and I have no patience for incompetence when it comes to races for elected office. If you can’t run your campaign well, what makes anyone think you’ll do any better if you’re elected?
I’m starting to get my autumn book itinerary in order, and I’m anticipating being back on a Faulkner kick this year. “Intruder In The Dust” and “Flags In The Dust” arrived while I was away. Can’t wait to read them when the time feels right. I’ve got a hankering for some Shelby Foote as well…
One month till Sam Adams Octoberfest starts making its way out here. I can’t wait.
One month from today, I’ll be minus a prostate. I can wait.

I think it’s a little too early to abandon ship on the Red Sox. The pitching can still right itself. They get some of their injured players back and get a little win streak going … there is still plenty of baseball to be played. Those guys are all veterans so that’s not out of the realm.
Sox fans will miss Francona if they run him out of town. He’s won two World Series in his five years. That’s better than anyone else has done over the same time period. You guys need to chill. 🙂

You’re right, Rob, thanks for appealing to one of the better angels of my nature.
That being said, I’m not taking anything away from Terry Francona – he’s deserved his spot at, or at least near, the top of the greatest Red Sox managers of all time. Nothing will ever take away from 2004, and 2007 was just icing on the cake.
Still, time does march on, and the cast of characters in any novel must sooner or later change to keep things from getting stale. And stale is where I see the Beantown Nine this year.
