Like my favorite female conservative would say, “You betcha!”
This story from the other day doesn’t surprise me in the least bit. The last year we held our Goodboys weekend in the mountains of northern New England was back in 1998, when we played for a second straight year at the Mount Washington Resort in Bretton Woods, NH. A beautiful, Donald Ross-inspired tract with beautiful vistas all around, to be sure. But while you’re lounging in your Lowell-area backyard sippin’ a brewskie and listening to the Sox on the radio under 85 degree blue skies dotted with pretty, puffy white clouds, up in the mountains of Vermont and New Hampshire it can be a whole lot different.
That year we held our Goodboys weekend in the middle of June, and on Saturday it was this freakin’ cold:
…and it only got worse, as it later clouded over and we found ourselves playing in sleet, believe it or not!
That was it for the Goodboys love affair with northern New England and June golf. The following year, we moved the Goodboys Invitational to the third weekend in July to coincide with the British Open (where it has remained ever since), and we moved the site of Goodboys weekend to Cape Cod, where it stayed until last year when we moved back to the Portsmouth area for a year or two. Where we go in years to come only God knows, but I can tell you it won’t be in the mountains of northern New England, where the weather – even in the middle of summer – remains too unpredictable.

Pool temp: 92 degrees
One year we played some off season golf at New Seabury. I thought this picture was from that day. Even looks like the ocean behind me and Vegas. ???

I think you might be right about that, Goose. Do you know what year that might have been? Also, I’m wondering if any of the Goodboys lurking out there would remember what year at Mount Washington we played in the sleet. Was it the first year (1997) or the second (1998)?
