Here in the Valley of the Sun we’ve been pretty lucky so far weather-wise this Spring. To date, the thermometer has reached 100 only once – something rather unusual for us. But, like they say, all good things must come to an end, and our luck appears to have run out. It’s gonna get very hot very fast – in fact, next week looks positively blistering. Good thing I’ll be in Atlanta on business.

Watch the pool temp really jump over the next week. Timely, then, that tomorrow I’ll have an exclusive interview with our pool shark, who’ll reveal the tricks of his trade. Stay tuned.

I’m re-reading Thomas Merton‘s wonderful book, The Sign of Jonas, his diary of his years as a Trappist monk at Abbey of the Gethsemani between 1946-52. Not only is it a marvelous collection of his thoughts, musings, and inner conflicts as he moved towards ordination as a Catholic priest while at the same time struggling with balancing his calling to the monastic life and solitude with his love of writing and need to express his thoughts, opinions, and feelings through writing (now there’s a conflict for you!), it’s a great “bathroom book” as well. What I mean is, you can keep it in your bathroom and pick out a few entries while doing your thing and always find something inspiring, moving, or interesting to take away.

One of the areas Merton’s writing excels is in dispelling any preconceived notion that monastics (whether monks or nuns) are somehow more pure or devoted to God than us humble working slobs out here in the so-called “real world”. The religious struggle with their own callings and their own journeys with Christ just as you or I do, it’s just that they’re doing so in places most of us can only dream of exploring our own faith journeys via. It’s a hard life, though, and one only few are called to and spend the rest of their lives in. It’s a life I’ve always been fascinated with ever since my own conversion 16 years ago, but one as a married guy I could never aspire to. Maybe in the next life, eh?

Anyways, here’s a great example of a Merton entry, and a pretty funny one at that:

One day a hermit from one of our monasteries in Canada came in from his hermitage [a small living space on a monastery ground for those called to live out their spirituaql callings in solitude] and started to tell the Abbot [the head honcho] how to run the monastery, so the Abbot excused himself for a moment and went out and told the Cellarer [the monk in charge of a monastery’s provisions] to go amd set fire to the hermitage. Then he came back and listened patiently to the advice that he was being given for nothing. When the hermit went back to his hermitage there was nothing left of it. So he returned to the monastery.

You gotta love the style of that Abbot.

Pool temp: 85 degrees
