To hear all the wailing and gnashing of teeth from the usual elitist loons on the Left – you know them as well as I do: the New York Times, Washington Post, L.A. Times, Boston Globe, MSNBC, CNN, NBC, CBS, ABC, ACLU, Rev. Al Sharpton, etc. etc. etc. – you’d think the I-10 from Tucson to Phoenix was being dug up on both sides to allow for the construction of concentration camps to hold all the illegal immigrants who had no papers to show Arizona law enforcement officers when they were stopped for simply walking down the street minding their own business.

The thing I find fairly common in reviewing all of the hysteria eminating from everyone above, and others you might expect as well to pile on for political expediency, is the following:

1. These people don’t live, and never have lived, in Arizona and have never set foot anywhere south and east of Tucson, where the problem is both real and getting worse by the day;

2. They haven’t bothered to read the legislation;

3. They’re more interested in the “rights” (a term I’ll use loosely) of those who are here illegally than they are in seeing the laws of this nation and the rights of its law-abiding, tax-paying citizens protected.

Not that I would, of course, expect anything different from the Left, who’s utter hypocrisy knows no bounds.

The fact of the matter is, the states along our southern border with Mexico are all having to deal with increasingly levels of danger and violence, all brought about by criminal activities associated with the Mexican drug cartels and the smuggling of drugs and people that help support its operations. When the federal government does nothing (actually, less than nothing since the Obama administration halted construction of the border fence begun under the Bush administration), and the Department of Homeland Security Director, Janet Napolitano, says the border is “as secure as it ever was” (not sure what that means, exactly), what is a state to do? I mean, you have to look out for your own interests, don’t you? As the Wall Street Journal’s editors wrote today, Arizona’s actions are a direct result of our failed national policy.

Is the legislation signed into law by our Governor Jan Brewer the other day the most opimal solution? Of course not – the best solution would be for Washington to get off its fat asses and pass meaningful immigration reform that starts with protecting the borders and enforcing the laws of the land first, but then provides some means for those who are here illegally but want to become U.S. citizens to get in line with everyone else who wants to do the same. (Just because Mexico happens to be next door shouldn’t make their citizens any higher on the immigration pecking order than anyone else.) But that’s going to take no small amount of bipartisan political action that puts the country’s interests ahead of the special interests, and you know that ain’t gonna happen anytime soon.

What the state of Arizona has done is put together a carefully-crafted piece of legislation designed to help law enforcement and send a mesage to the bow-tied bum-kissing bureaucrats in Washington saying that we’re tired of waiting for a comprehensive solution to defend this nation’s borders. The loons on the political Left can call us all hayseeds and racists, and threaten boycotts and try and milk this for every inch of political capital they can get, but it appears most people around these parts are far more informed about what’s happening here and are willing to support this action.

I sure do.

  1. Essentially every part of this state law already exists as federal law. Even the so-called-Nazi ‘show me your papers’ concerns that have civil rights activists in such an uproar do nothing more than reference federal law (see 8 UNITED STATES CODE SECTION 1304(e)).

    All this new law does is gives the various state law enforcement the authority *and responsibility* to enforce them. They can no longer say “that’s not our job” (cough… Phoenix Police Dept… cough).

  2. That’s why Phil Gordon (mayor of Phoenix) is up in arms. He hates anything to do with responsibility for the illegal problem. What a dope, I’ll cast my lot with the likes of Sheriff Joe anyday…
