My apologies for the delay in posting drewsi's and Dave Richard's comments. This new WordPress is a pain in the neck, as it requires someone's first comment to be approved by me, and then you're free to post at will forever going forward.

Thanks to you both for your comments, and come back again soon, y'hear? We here in the 'Nation love hearing from people who want to agree or disagree with The Great White Shank - diversity of views is the spice of blogging!

Thanks for your comment Rob. Perhaps if taken in the present tense, the answer may be no - unless, of course, you've been unemployed for a long time. And whether or not the present situation is because of government or not, well that can be debated either way.

I think what is worrying people (and, I believe preventing real movement on the unemployment front) is the direction of things. You have a country where all the "baby boomers" are just starting to enter their retirement years, and no one in government has seriously sought to addresss the coming crises in Social Security, Medicare, health care, etc. And to think the government can simply tax and spend their way out of these crises is beyond absurd. Piling up debt we can not afford while ignoring what I think are truly big issues no one wants to talk about - Democrat or Republican - that's what has everyone on edge.

I'm not saying the Republicans have all the answers, because they're as culpable as the Democrats are, since both parties have had ample time over the last 2+ decades to attempt to address these issues, but both parties have demogogued their way around it.

Things may indeed not be that bad now, but I have a feeling things are going to get far worse before - if ever - they get better. People voted for Barck Obama because they really thought, based on his promises, he was going to be different, he was going to transcend "politics as usual". The fact he's been revealed as just another hack pol incapable or unwilling to take truly bold steps in leadership (and I'm not talking about recycling decrepit "New Deal" ideas from over seventy years ago that have no application in the 21st century) is disheartening and even frightening to people.

You're right about this: people have to step back and examine their lives, and take control over them. It's pointless to wait and hope for government to do anything for you - hell, New Orleans has found that out. The time is quickly coming when no President and no government will be able to save and support us all, and it will be ever man for himself.

The electorate is polarized because the rhetoric coming from the right now is every bit as shrill and angry as it was from the left during the Bush administration and as it was from the right during the Clinton administration before that. Everyone needs to step back and examine their lives. Is it really that bad for most people and is it because of government? Absolutely not. On both counts.

Agree that it was pretty bad, Doug.

Here's my view of what Obama might have said (if he were facing reality) at my website:

"Mr. “Hopenchange” has revealed himself to be a thin-skinned, bitter, unprepared, detached, aloof, and arrogant politician unwilling to admit his own mistakes and lacking in any kind of graciousness and class typically associated with the office of the President of the United States". You sir, don't know what you are talking about -- Obama is the classiest president we have had in living memory. And please tell me the name of the last president who didn't use a tele-prompter? Why even mention it? It was a good speech and he is a very good president.
