Another week, and this week it looks like we’ll be keep an eye on the tropics. Here’s a great link for anyone interested.
I’m not sure what that cold front plans to do after it passes across the Northeast late Wednesday, but were I some rich boatowner in Newport, Rhode Island, I might give some thought to contacting my buddy the harbormaster tomorrow. Just in case…
1969 was such an incredible year, and we’ve been hitting a lot of fortieth anniversaries lately: Chappaquiddick, the Apollo moon landings, Woodstock, the Manson murders have all gotten a lot of attention. Last week, I mentioned The Beatles’ “Abbey Road” release, and, boy, the anniversaries just keep on coming.
Today is the fortieth anniversary of Hurricane Camille, the strongest storm to ever enter the United States mainland on record. Tracey and I stopped at the Hurricane Camille Gift Shop (later a later victim of Hurricane Katrina, BTW) while we were in Gulfport a number of years ago and I bought a book about it. Nowadays, everyone thinks of Katrina as being a bad hurricane – and it was – but for those who are old enough to remember, they don’t hit much harder than Camille did.
Tiger Woods proves to be human after all. I didn’t watch even a minute of today’s final round – you just assume Tiger’s got it locked up. I’m wondering if we’re starting to see the end of Tiger’s unprecedented reign of success. Tick, tick, tick, Tiger…
Unfortunately, I did watch a little of the Red Sox as they lost two of of three in Texas this weekend. You don’t mind a team losing – anyone can hit a bad stretch – but the Sox are playing as dead as Kelsey’s nuts and losing ugly. Time to start looking in the mirror, boys…
I think this is pretty funny. I’m with Dave on this one – I’m guessing Barack Obama was indeed born in Hawaii, but the whole “birther” movement points to a larger problem that White House is gonna have to address sooner or later. The fact is, as I’ve mentioned earlier in this spot, there isn’t a President elected in modern times we know less about than Barack Obama. He has yet to release his heath records (why?), his education record (why?), or an official copy of his birth certificate. This, of course, from the candidate who promised his Presidency would be the most transparent in history.
Camille was bad news. Her damage was minimized (Terrible choice of words) mainly because she didn’t hit a major population center, didn’t bring as much rain, and didn’t cause a levee to be breached. The Gulf Coast was not as developed in 1969 as it was in 2005. Katrina was not only powerful but she hit at almost the perfect time and place to cause maximum damage, although even she could have been worse. Katrina knocked Camille and Betsy right out of our consciousness. “The storm”, in local parlance, refers to Katrina. Hopefully, no hurricane will replace her.

Thanks Rob – you’re right, it is almost incalculable the kind of devastation that a 2009 version of Camille would cause if something like that went a little more left or a little more right.
