Scott at Power Line has an interesting post about the many problems facing the Hillary! campaign, including links where “Madame Once Inevitable” has actually been the subject of (gasp!) boos and catcalls at campaign events in New Hampshire this weekend.
When you start to think about, it’s amazing just how quickly the house of cards called the Hillary Clinton campaign has come crashing down. After all, up until her illegal aliens/driver’s license flip-flop/misstep at the October debate, her campaign had been able to effectively cloak their candidate with an “aura of inevitability” – a strategy that was fine until people suddenly realized that the REAL Hillary could never match the almost Christ-like image and expectations the mainstream dino-media had surrounded her with. As I’ve mentioned on a number of occasions here, there was no way Hillary could meet those kinds of lofty expectations. As a politician, she has proven incapable of standing on her two feet, and, when things started to go awry after the October debate, rather than showing herself as a strong candidate capable of handling any missteps that are inescapable in a major political campaign, she quickly ran to ol’ husband Bill to come to her rescue.
What this ended up doing was making a (in my view) minor misstep into a major, perhaps fatal, mistake. First, it turned off her feminist base who now came to see her as a weak pretender to the throne and the cause, and secondly, it prevented her from portraying herself as a true agent of change: how can you be an agent of change when your campaign is effectively turning the clock back to the 1990s? Subsequently, unable to regain its footing, Hillary’s campaign went foolishly negative on Barack Obama, going after him personally (the kindergarden fiasco) rather than substantly on issues. This not only brought the campaign untold days of ridicule, but the Obama campaign, staying cool and not being brought into that level of discourse, saw its own favorability ratings shoot up at the expense of Hillary’s – something she could not afford to have happen.
Of course, there’s still a long way to go, but if 2008 proves to be the end of Hillary’s presidential aspirations, there will be no more lasting symbol of it than her appearance in Iowa the other night after the results came in, pathetically trying to portray herself as an agent of change while surrounded by husband Bill, Wesley Clark, and (unbelievably) former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright – all symbols of her husband’s presidency. What the $%#@! could her campaign have been thing???
It just reminds me of that marvelous scene in “All The President’s Men”, where, in the first of their underground parking garage meetings, Deep Throat tells Bob Woodward, “Look, forget the myths the media’s created about the White House – the truth is, these are not very bright guys…”.
I think we’re finding out the same holds true when it comes to Hillary Clinton’s campaign.
