Saw this quote from David Virtue on the recent gathering of Episcopal Church bishops in New Orleans:

While observing the Episcopal House of Bishops in action from the bleachers at the Intercontinental Hotel in New Orleans recently, I was struck by the fact that before me were a group of mostly white males playing out the moral delusions of the 60’s as they head towards retirement in the early decades of the 21st century.

What struck me most was that, in the absence of any notion of personal sin (except perhaps child and female abuse), the idea of sin, and therefore shame, was entirely absent. Sin is now cast mostly in terms of racism and homophobia and Global South Primates [Ed. note: the more conservative African and Asian churches of the worldwide Anglican Communion] who can’t quite get with the program that the Episcopal Church and Mother [Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts] Schori know best about how the whole Anglican Communion should be run, if only it could be let loose to run (read ruin) it.

True enough, but I couldn’t help but think how appropriate Virtue’s quote was, not only to the Episcopal bishops, but also to the Democratic Party.

Consider: when was the last time you heard a Democrat propose anything that doesn’t involve greater power to the federal government, increased taxes, or redistribution of wealth all for the sake of “fairness”?. When have you heard a Democrat not attempt to play the “race card” or “sex card” for political gain whenever given the chance? When have you ever heard a Democrat give a speech that doesn’t involve fighting for or against something, be it gay rights, racism, sexism, economic equality, or any kind of injustice, whatever the flavor of the day happens to be?

I guess what I’m saying here is that, whether you’re an Episcopal Church bishop or a life-long Democrat, the ’60s are over and it’s time to get over it. The battle for equality amongst the races and the sexes has moved far beyond the lunch counter and the voting booth, and moved to the office, the board room, and entrepreneur. And as much as those like Hillary Clinton and the mainstream dino-media would wish you would ignore or forget it, there is unprecedented wealth, prosperity, and opportunity in the country today, greater access to health care then anywhere else in the world, and an era of peace on our shores unlike any other time in this country’s history.

But of course, to Episcopal Church bishops and the Democrats, that’s not good enough.

The fact is, we as a country have become greedy, lazy, spoiled, self-indulgent, and narcissistic unlike any other combination of generations in our country’s history. Any time someone looks at another in a funny way, offense is taken and the lawsuits fly. Anytime anyone tries to tell people that certain kinds of behavior – be they sexual, economic, or social – are ill-advised and run counter to the best interests of society, you’re labeled a homophobe, racist, or – even worse – a right-wing conservative. We no longer seem willing to take any responsibility for our own actions and always go crying to the federal government or the state and federal courts seeking compensation of some sort or another whenever we can’t get our way. Gay people complain they can’t get married. The horror! People who over-extend themselves in real estate trying to make a quick buck go whining to the government or the courts for a bail out or compensation when the real estate market goes south. Corporations take American jobs overseas so they can make the most profit. It makes me sick, and frankly, I’m tired of it all.

The bishops of the Episcopal Church can continue to wear their blinders as they cater to the gay/lesbian/transgender activists of their denomination who seem bent on driving the Church over the cliff and out of the Anglican Communion. Fine. Thousands of parishioners have voted, and will continue to vote, with their feet and will take their energies, their families, and – perhaps most importantly – their money with them. The Church has failed itself and this society with their weak-kneed, limp-wristed stand on personal behavior, personal responsibility, and sin, and while they may not go to Hell for it (after all, who am I to judge?), they’ll certainly lose their Church as its financial and structural foundation washes away beneath their feet. Which is what these apostates and hypocrites deserve.

As for the Democrtaic Party, this country has serious concerns facing it in the years ahead. Whether it be what to do about Social Security and our aging population, the rising cost of entitlement programs, the lack of border enforcement, the rise of radical Islamic fundamentalism both worldwide and within our midst, or the loss of our very soul as a country (a greater danger than any of these combined, in my view), someone has to turn this ship around. The time has come for creative leadership – one that puts the power back in the hands of the people, not increasing it for a arrogant, wasteful, and clueless central government. And the answer lies not in yet another polarizing figure, as a Hillary Clinton would be: I don’t know about you, but I’m sick of the Bushes and the Clintons.

So here it is in a nutshell: it’s time for both the Episcopal Church and Democratic Party leadership to realize that the ’60s are over. People have changed, the country has changed, the world itself has changed; only they seem not to have noticed it. So take your outdated and pathetic anti-whatever slogans and protests and marches and music and ridiculous causes and spare us all the timewarp you seem to have caught yourselves in. 1967 was 40 – count ’em – 40 years ago, and, unless you’ve noticed, the freedoms we now share as a country and a culture are no longer serving it well. There is after all such a thing as too much of a good thing, and we as a society are now reaping the whirlwind of everything you marched and sang and fought for. Take responsibility for your actions, and demand everyone else do the same. We’d all be a whole lot better off in my view.
