A big congrats to Zach Johnson, your new Masters champion, capping a wild and wacky week amidst the beauty and majesty of Augusta National. While the giants and the usual big names one expected to see at or near the top of the leaderboard hacked their way around Augusta to varying degrees of success, Johnson kept his cool by playing as uneventful a round of golf as could be expected on a breezy Sunday afternoon, hitting fairways and greens, and making the putts he needed to make.
While a lot of people were rooting for Tiger or Phil to get another green jacket, I was hoping someone would come out of the blue and play well enough on Sunday to withstand any charge one of the big boys would make. Not only is it good for the game, but good for those golfers on the Tour who aren’t necessarily the big bombers out there. This week’s Masters proved that being a big hitter isn’t necessarily the ticket to success – Brett Wetterich single-handedly proved that with his Saturday round. There oughta be plenty of room in the winner’s circle for those who play smart and steady, and Johnson proved just that today.
Congrats to him for his first major visitory and his green jacket.
