(Hat tip: Polipundit)

Far be it from me to tell anyone how they should vote – I never would, so I won’t. However, I prefer to vote for people who are unafraid to tell me what they think and what they would do if elected. I’d be the first one to say I couldn’t disagree more with PA Rep. John Murtha and his “cut and run” position on the war in Iraq. But at least I know what he stands for. His Democratic colleagues, on the other hand, have been playing it pretty coy this entire election cycle by trying to make it a referendum on the Republicans without putting forth any formal plan of their own, on anything. And why? Because the Democratic leadership knows that, if given the chance to take full control of the Executive and Legislative branches of government, they would:

a) raise taxes, roll back the Bush tax cuts, or both
b) increase entitlement spending via a national heath care program
c) withdraw all American troops from Iraq ASAP
d) push for a weakening of traditional marriage
e) push for a strengthening of abortion rights
f) push for judges who would legislate from the bench

Now if that’s your stand politically, that’s fine. But Democrats everywhere KNOW that’s what their party stands for, so why doesn’t their party leadership just come out and boldly say so? You know why – because they know they’d get their brains beaten in come election time. Consider the fact that this year’s Democratic strategy has been to either: 1) run as a conservative, a la Harold Ford, Jr. in TN or James Webb in VA, or 2) use the election as a referendum solely on President Bush and Iraq.

Option 1, I think, is a mistake: Democrats should not be afraid to run as Democrats – let people have real choices at the ballot box, for Gawdsakes.

Option 2 would be all well and good – IF Democrats had a formal strategy of their own to put forth. But what are their plans when it comes to Iraq? Outside of John Murtha (and, I guess the likes of Russ Feingold, John Kerry, and Ted Kennedy), your guess is as good as mine. Townhall’s David Limbaugh hits the nail square on the head by saying what no so-called “political analyst” in the mainstream dino-media seems capable of saying:

Democrats have been holding their breath throughout the campaign season, praying they could hold on to an apparent lead by relying solely on their criticism of the president’s policies and without revealing their hand on the war.

They had no other issues to run on, since the robustness of the Bush economy became too obvious for them to distort it and their faint toward social conservatism was too absurd to sustain, even with the mini-explosion of isolated Republican “morality” scandals.

They also did their best to avoid national security and the war on terror, knowing that public scrutiny would highlight their unacceptably irresponsible softness on both. Beyond scandalmongering and distraction, their campaign has centered on segregating Iraq from the war on terror, then painting Bush and Republicans as wholly incompetent and immoral concerning the initiation and prosecution of that war.

Democrats have been laboring to make this a referendum on the president’s performance in Iraq without regard to what they would do differently.

Perhaps this is the right strategy – again, we’ll know tonight. But silly me, I feel you ought to be always be able to vote FOR someone or something, not just against. Republicans tried that in 1996 against Bill Clinton and got clobbered; the Dems tried it in 2004 against President Bush and fell short. We’ll see how the same “politics of addition by subtraction” works this go-round. My guess is, not as well for the Dems as the conventional wisdom goes.

But we’ll all know tonight. I just pray that at the end of it all, Howard isn’t dancing the Watusi with a lampshade on his head.

  2. Thanks for the comment, Kerry. I think it’s only simpler in Canada if you don’t have to keep making doctors appointments for balky soccer knees!
