The events of the past few days provide some much-needed good news on the Global War on Terror front.
Of course, #1 on the list is the death of Al-Qaeda henchman Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, courtesy of the U.S Air Force. Like Boston’s favorite talk-host Howie Carr would say, al-Zarqawi’s premature departure from this earth was on account of illnesss: the civilized world got sick of him. Hot Air has a comprehensive review of the attack, its planning, and its aftermath, including seeing a strange similarity with the end of The Godfather. Warning: includes a clueless response by California Rep. Pete Stark. I mean, c’mon, Pete, can’t you say something good about the Bush administration and the military just! this! once!? Jeesh.
…Combine that with the Iraqi government’s announcement of the appointments of three key security positions – a move that will help greatly the continuing transition of responsibility for Iraq’s security from the U.S. to the Iraqis. This can only be a good thing.
…Combine that with the news of the arrest of three suspected terrorists (one American, two Brits) in England – two of them at British airports. The American is suspected of conspiring to send money and equipment to Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan, the other two are suspected of having connections with the 17 Muslims arrested last month in Canada and charged with attempting to blow up government buildings. Captain Ed has it all here.
…Combine this with the news that an Israeli air strike has killed a top Hamas leader in the Gaza Strip. For Israel and Israelis, a case of “kill or be killed”, I would surmise.
Taken all together, it was indeed a bad day for the bad guys, indeed.
It is good news but I prefer the Israeli’s business-like approach to the fanfare that Zarqawi’s death is getting. OK, this terrorist is gone. Next? These thugs don’t need to go down in flames. They just need to go down. The more anonymously, the better.
