…that spoiled Hollywood brats Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie want to sell pictures of their new child for charity, so they say. What a couple of bozos – how ’bout you just give some of the astronomical money you both make to charity and release the photos for public consumption? But they won’t.
Comment: Come to think of it, it always bothers me when big rock stars and celebrities host concerts or telethons to raise money for charitable causes. Here’s a better idea: you tell people how much you’re donating personally as a percentage of your income, then ask the public to do the same. Oh. What’s that I hear? Crickets chirping????
…teen golf phenom Michelle Wie failed to qualify for the U.S. Open. Seems Wie shot a 3-over 75 in her second U.S. Open qualifying round, tying her for 59th at 1-over 143, five shots off the possible cut.
Comment: Look, I know she’s still only 16, and everyone is rightfully impressed with her talent at such a tender age, but even die-hard Wie supporter Kelly Tilghman of The Golf Channel would have take a break from her lovey-dovey gushing and admit that, when it comes to winning or qualifying for anything important in her brief career up to now, chick’s had more near-misses than the air space covered by an inebriated and over-worked air traffic controller.
…The Globe’s Mike Reiss thinks the Pat’s dealing WR Bethel Johnson to the Saints for DT Johnathan Sullivan is a good deal for both sides.
Comment: OK, so it’s not exactly what you’d call a major deal, but there’s potential upside in the deal for both teams. Both players have been, arguably, underachievers for their former clubs, and both players will have a chance to impress in their new locations, since they help fill existing needs on both sides. And isn’t that what good trades are supposed to be all about?
…The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers finally admitted that they were to fault for the levee failures following Hurricane Katrina.
Comment: Slowly but gradually, the history of the post-Katrina tragedy is being rewritten, which can only be a good thing. The report by the Corps, coupled with the additional news that New Orleans itself is sinking at a rate faster than originally thought, provides much-needed ammo to those who have been pushing for an honest and realistic dialogue about what the size and scope of the New Orleans recovery effort should be – not the least being the wisdom of rebuilding and resettling those areas most flood-prone historically and where the most damage was inflicted.
…that Hugh Hewitt is asking the right question about the recent arrests of 17 Canadian Muslims on terrorism charges.
Comment: Before this investigation is over, I guarantee its size and scope will increase beyond anyone’s imagination. This will turn out to be a huge arrest – one that will result in the uncovering of several Muslim “sleeper cells” in the U.S., Canada, and elsewhere. Like the old movie ad said, “Be afraid. Be very afraid”.
Wie has a lot of the Anna Kournikova thing going for her. She hasn’t done much and she has some talent, probably more than Kournikova ever had. It’s a neat story and the camera adores her.
The Johnson for Sullivan trade is your basic nothing for nothing trade. I doubt Johnson can even make the team here in New Orleans and Sullivan has a big time attitude and weight problem that won’t play any better in New England than it does in New Orleans. They’ll both be available on waivers before the season is out.
